What if everyone in Smyrna read the same book?
"Smyrna Reads," a "One
Book" project, poses this question each year. This year's campaign focused
on famous and award-winning author, Flannery O'Connor. The featured “read” this
year was her short story, "Good Country People."
Flannery O'Connor is considered one of America's greatest
fiction writers and one of the strongest apologists for Roman Catholicism in
the twentieth century. Born of the
marriage of two of Georgia's oldest Catholic families, O'Connor was a devout
believer whose small but impressive body of fiction presents the soul's
struggle with what she called the "stinking mad shadow of Jesus."
The Smyrna Arts & Cultural Council co-sponsored the
documentary screening of “Uncommon Grace: The Life of Flannery O’Connor” by
Smyrna documentarian Bridget Kurt. Ms.
Kurt’s discussion included expert commentary and rare photographs which gave the attendees a
new appreciation for this highly celebrated, yet often misunderstood,
storyteller.
Thank you, Bridget Kurt, for your excellent
presentation!
