Painting is a very personal experience for me because it's my way of expressing and sharing the stories that I tend to keep hidden in the deepest parts of my mind. As a child I would lose myself for hours in this or that Fantasy novel, pouring over tales like "Watership Down", "The Jungle Book" or "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe". When I wasn't reading, I was making up stories of my own... writing them down, or drawing them out on paper... dreaming up what the places and characters looked like and how they made me feel. Some haunt me still, and beg to be released even as new images form in my mind.

Some of my paintings come from dreams (sometimes even nightmares), but many begin by unlocking that dusty vault in my mind and unwrapping a story, once imagined by a child. I think of my paintings as pages from a storybook. If you open the book to the middle and begin reading, without knowing the beginning or end, this would be where you are... a snapshot in time. I want my work to evoke a curious sense of wonder and strange familiarity in the viewer... the notion that there is a wondrous story behind it all, and the anticipation of more yet to come.”

SACC Presents Improv-O-Rama

The Smyrna Arts & Cultural Council presented Improv-O-Rama last night at the Smyrna Community Center.  This was the first production of our Threare Committee.  The trio cast members were local actors and improvisers Spencer Stephens, Sarah Ackerman and Maghed Roushdi.

Improv-O-Rama was a hilarious night of unscripted comedy theatre filled with audience participation, jokes and surprises! The comedy theatre was both uproariously funny and totally off the cuff! Our trio of award-winning improvisers took the stage and made up the entire show on the spot in front of a live audience.

THANK YOU, Improv-O-Rama cast members and SACC Theatre Committee Chairperson Lee Sanders, for all the great work producing Improv-O-Rama! We had a great time.

I’ve had a pencil in my hand as far back as I can remember, and a drawing of a horse was usually the outcome.  Growing up, I read every horse book I could get my hands on and was inspired by the beautiful illustrations, especially ones like Walter Farley’s “Black Stallion” series.  I have dabbled in many mediums over the years--oil, acrylic, watercolor, airbrush, etc.

However, after studying pastels with Lesley Harrison, an internationally-known pastelist whose work I have admired for years, pastel is my medium of choice.  Lesley has my eternal gratitude for introducing me to this exciting medium that thrills me like no other.  I still enjoy working with graphite pencil, too, because I “cut my artistic teeth” in this medium.  It, like pastel, enables me to achieve all the subtleties needed for a portrait that comes alive!

Musician Statement:

I started music about 10 years ago while living in Los Angeles. Pursuing acting all my life had been amazing but I needed a break. This 'break' led to pickin up that dusty guitar and spending hours a day just trying to figure it out…chords on napkins, asking a lot of questions, & a lot of long nights researching. I'm not a chick who can be told I can't do something and after a few open mics I got offered my first gig. This gig led to the next year..making a first record, getting signed on a small label, doing my first tour, & working long hours at a coffee shop to pay the bills. Working in that coffee shop early mornings led me to meeting some amazing people as well as opportunities, like meeting my producers, tv hosts Craig Ferguson &Tyra Banks, as well as various film/tv supervisors. Within a few years I went off on my own, started booking tours around the US, was given the opportunity to perform on the Late Late Show w/Craig Ferguson, The Tyra Banks Show, play 250+ dates a year, & made a second record.

Artist Statement:

Local Smyrna artist Joan Friedman painted in her head long before putting paint to canvas, longing for the nudge that would make it a reality.  A dozen years of making colorful jewelry was a natural segue to painting, and it was a "love at first sight" type of experience.  An appreciation for various styles grew over the past twenty plus years as she and husband Lee collected original works by local and national artists. After a career in Nursing and raising two sons, Joan and Lee are now raising a Collie and a cat, and she continues to find time to also make jewelry, teach classes in jewelry making, garden, sew and volunteer year round for her favorite charity, Operation Christmas Child.
