Artist Statement

I was born in Statesboro, GA. I am visual artist, artisan, inventor and poet. I would consider my art to be mostly conceptual and innovative with bold colors and stylized renderings. I've lived mostly in the Southeast, including Florida and South Carolina. I matriculated in the early years in Georgia and completed my Bachelor of Science degrees at SC State University. While attending college, I earned two diplomas, one concentrating in Marketing and the other concentrating in Fashion Merchandising. Later when I moved to Atlanta, GA, I completed my Associates of Arts Degree in Fashion Design at Bauder College. There I read, researched and proposed doing more in the field of Fine Art. As a small child I remember questioning my mother on why I could not draw like my brother (or paint as she did), so she said to me, "You won't know until you try." From there my interest sparked, my skills blossomed, and exploration began.

Buddy Finethy is the legendary creator of the characters and original store aesthetics for Mellow Mushroom pizza bakers.  In a wide ranging career, he's worked with Coca Cola, Frito-Lay , Rio Bravo and hundreds of other businesses big and small.

Born and raised in the upstate of South Carolina, he eventually attended Reinhardt college in Canton Ga. Underground comics, animation,  album covers and psychedelic gig posters all fed his imagination. He originally pursued comic books and illustration, but found his true calling in defining identities in marketing.

Synthesizing his pop culture leanings with rock and roll tastes, he eventually found an audience steeped in his same milieu.  He started doing illustration work for RELIX magazine, an outlet for the Grateful Dead, in the late 1980's.

Soon He joined the struggling nascent Mellow Mushroom pizza Chain, bringing the charecters of Mel, Dude and the wiz to life.  He spent three decades designing tens of thousands of ads, T-Shirt, calendars and eventually moving on to finding his true canvas, environment design.  The challenge of designing an interior and exterior embodiment was a source  of never ending wonder, and he fell in love with creating a psychedelic fantasy land.  He would remain a mainstay of the chain as creative director for three decades.

In his work outside of Mellow Mushroom, he's had the pleasure of working with legendary musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Taj Mahal, the Allman Brothers and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.  His work with the Chili Peppers was inducted into the permanent collection of the Hard Rock Cafe in 1997.

Since retiring from Mellow Mushroom in late 2016, he's had an active roster of clients continuing his growth in new and interesting directions.  You can visit his new incarnation, ARCADUS DESIGN GROUP on Facebook.

Katie Martin & Sue Pezely opened the 2017 FRESH MARKET MUSIC & ART! season on May 6, 2017.  Click the links to enjoy the PHOTOS and VIDEOS.

FRESH MARKET MUSIC & ART! is presented by Smyrna Arts & Cultural Council with financial support provided by Keep Smyrna Beautiful. It is held at the Smyrna Fresh Produce Market every Saturday morning from 8:00 am to noon from May 6 to September 30, 2017.

Musician Statement

Performing across the Southeast since 2006, Katie Martin's unique blend of blues, folk, and soul mesmerizes audiences in a way that has to be seen to understand. Her agelessly soulful vocals soar effortlessly above a rich propulsion of acoustic blues guitar reminiscent of Muddy Waters combined with the beautiful folk guitar of James Taylor, all performed with the honest intensity of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Seeing Katie Martin perform is an experience like no other, and her refreshing individuality is one that leaves a lasting impression long after the stage has grown silent. She released her acoustic EP " Away From Here" with Haney Records in 2011. In 2015 she released "Katie Martin : Live From the Chocolate Room" ft. Tony Brook on slide guitar, and her debut album, "Purpose" both recorded, produced, and engineered by Larry Mitchell at The Chocolate Room.
