Matt Lemmler Jazz Combo Performs at Jonquil City Sessions

The Matt Lemmler Jazz Combo performed at Jonquil City Sessions last night.  Attendees were treated to classic New Orleans jazz including original music written by Matt. The band also incorporated jazz interpretations of classic modern songs into the play list.  Everyone enjoyed an evening of superb entertainment.

About Matt Lemmler
Recently elected Governor for the GRAMMY Recording Academy, Matt Lemmler is considered to be one of the most original musicians to recently emerge from the birthplace of jazz. Influenced by the music he heard growing up in New Orleans, Matt Lemmler is a noted and accomplished jazz pianist, vocalist, producer, arranger and educator. He is among an elite group of musicians recognized and officially designated as a “Steinway Artist”.

Videos:

He grew up playing music and studied arranging with Grammy award-winning arranger Tony Klatka and jazz piano with Ellis Marsalis, patriarch of the Marsalis family. These early and influential mentors inspired him to pursue and dedicate his life’s work as a professional jazz musician.

During college, he was the house pianist for a jam session at New Orleans’ premier jazz club, Snug Harbor and played with many local greats. After completing his Bachelor’s degree at Loyola University in 1990, Lemmler moved to New York City where he received his Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance & Composition from The Manhattan School of Music. While living in NYC, he studied with jazz pianists Kenny Werner and Harold Danko, composed and arranged many original works, some of which he performed in Europe and debuted at Carnegie Hall, and arranged and performed with many of the jazz greats until eventually relocating back to his hometown of New Orleans in 1994.

Shortly after returning home, he was hired as pianist for Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical The Phantom of the Opera, touring the U.S. for 4 years before returning home to work with New Orleans jazz legend, Pete Fountain. In 2000, Lemmler set out to pursue his own projects and recordings, the first, Portraits of Wonder, a tribute to the genius of Stevie Wonder, earned a truckload of kudos for this innovative CD, which recast gems from the Stevie Wonder songbook into elegant modern jazz showcases.

In 2004, Lemmler was commissioned to arrange and conduct for French pop star, Dany Brillant. Brillant’s fascination with New Orleans inspired him to record A La Nouvelle Orleans in the Big Easy using members of Harry Connick, Jr.’s big band. A La Nouvelle Orleans went Platinum Gold in Europe.

While teaching jazz piano and arranging at both Loyola University and the University of New Orleans, Lemmler was recommended by Ellis Marsalis to replace him, upon his retirement, as full-time Assistant Professor of Jazz Piano at the University of New Orleans. In August 2005, after accepting the tenure track position at UNO, fate stepped in and Hurricane Katrina changed his life forever. He evacuated to Houston, Texas where he was working within two weeks as pianist for Tommy’s Seafood Steakhouse.

After the huge success of Lemmler and Brillant’s first collaboration, Matt was hired once again by Brillant to serve as his musical director for his next CD, Histoire d'Un Amour. On this project, Lemmler arranged & conducted for a 16 piece big band and 30 piece orchestra featuring 60’s/70’s pop cover tunes. Because New Orleans was still reeling from the devastation of Katrina, Lemmler hoped recording there would bring new life and hope to his hometown.

In January 2006, Matt was hired as musical director for Tommy’s Seafood Steakhouse, where he elevated the restaurant and jazz club into one of Houston’s leading venues for live jazz. Top notch players from New Orleans, New York and Houston performed nightly.

In the spring of 2006 Matt recorded his next CD, a compilation of classic New Orleans standards. The Music of New Orleans is a soulful and heart-rending tribute to his beloved city and to all the New Orleans musicians, past and present, which influenced him and his music.

After leaving his position at Tommy’s, Lemmler accepted the prestigious position as musical director of Trinity Church/Houston for the Sunday Jazz Mass services. He was honored to hold a creative/spiritual position that allowed him to arrange and compose hymns/spirituals for each Sunday’s services. He also helped produce the 9th Annual Trinity Jazz Festival and composed the concluding Sunday Jazz Mass “Tribute to the Music of New Orleans” which featured New Orleans musicians Jason Marsalis, Roland Guerin, Herlin Riley, Kim Prevost as well as Houston’s best jazz musicians.

After five years in exile in Houston, Matt’s spiritual awakening and musical path led him back home to New Orleans. Shortly after returning home in 2010, Lemmler’s piano and arranging skills were featured on New Orleans Jazz trumpeter and vocalist Kermit Ruffins’ (from HBO series Treme) last two CD’s, Have a Crazy Cool Christmas and Happy Talk. That same year, Lemmler established his production company SMartist Productions LLC and immediately started producing promising artists and new projects with his New Orleans Jazz Revival Band.

This ensemble performs arrangements from Portraits of Wonder, Music of New Orleans and music from the soon to be released CD UBUNTU, which features musicians Brian Blade, Bill Summers, Jason Marsalis, Sean Jones, John Ellis, Kim Prevost, Evan Christopher, Mark Mullins, Shane Theriot and others. This new path of Spiritual inspiration continues to enlighten Lemmler about the healing power of music, and continues to motivate him to perform New Orleans Jazz for people around the world.

In 2011, Lemmler was elected to the GRAMMY Recording Academy Governor position, Memphis Chapter Board and also appeared in an episode of HBO’s TREME performing an original composition.

For this jazz concert Matt will be accompanied by a select ensemble of his New Orleans musical collaborators.

Aida Arias to Exhibit at “Art at the Fountain” at the Jonquil Festival.

Aida Arias will exhibit at the Smyrna Arts & Cultural Council’s “Art at the Fountain” at the Jonquil Festival on October 22nd and 23rd.

Since I was a child, drawing and painting were a favorite pastimes of mine, a box Crayola would keep my hyperactive little self, quiet and focused for hours. And I would not even need paper, there were plenty of walls to draw on and siblings take the fall for my creative mischief! And believe me, there are some pretty good family stories on the subject.

On a serious note, my mom was the creative parent, and my dad, a lawyer was the intellectual and nature lover. Mom was the interior designer by education, and stay at home mom who took art classes like oil painting, porcelain, decoupage and paper and metal embossing. She would enroll me and my two siblings in pottery and painting classes over the Summer break. Probably for the creative benefits for us, and for her own mental sanity! We were a handful!

Anyways, creativity was modeled at home and encouraged as a pastime, and  an important part of school work. Growing up in Puerto Rico, one of my fondest memories  is painting banners for my school’s field days. No white, flat bed sheet was safe from being sewn together to become a several stories long banner supporting my class in the school’s field day. No brush or even house paint would be out of boundaries to be used or mixed to suit the colors of our designs.  I loved the time spent painting, talking and bonding with my school friends.

It still holds true for me that the best and most enjoyable time spent time with friends, I have had it while painting banners, scrapbooking, making mixed media and taking art classes with them.  I love the friendship and sense of community that forms around people while making art, sharing family news, discussing the weather and latest news; and mostly encouraging each other’s process and art.  Making art is a vulnerable process where you are constantly making choices, solving the problem at hand and questioning “Is this good enough? Am I a good enough artist?  Friends (and teachers whoa also become your friends) get you through the doubts and encourage you to go on and keep growing as an artist. So when I moved to Atlanta in 2015, the first thing I did was sign me up for some art classes. I have been lucky enough that the Spruill Center for the Arts has some great teachers and a rich course offering.   I have found my community, made new friends and every day continue to grow as an artist.

hese days you will find me taking art classes in the workshop style and others more educational and technical.  I continue to make Mixed Media Showboxes, which I discovered while scrapbooking for my girls, and painting things that remind me of Puerto Rico, people and things of a time gone by, and selling them at local art festivals in Atlanta.

Stacey Brown to Exhibit at “Art at the Fountain” at the Jonquil Festival

Stacey Brown will exhibit at the Smyrna Arts & Cultural Council’s “Art at the Fountain” at the Jonquil Festival on October 22nd and 23rd.

Visual artist Stacey Brown, currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia offers an eclectic collection of original paintings for the contemporary art lover. Born and reared in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, his artistic journey of discovery began with aspirations for a career in graphic design. After graduating from the Art Institute of Atlanta, he embarked on a successful ten year career in his chosen field, but something was “missing” in his life. That something “missing” drew him to his paint brush, and he decided to pursue his true love, fine art.

His passion for the arts has led him to a successful career as a full-time artist, expressing himself through acrylic paintings on glass, and watercolor on paper. He remains visually aware of his surroundings by incorporating colors that correspond with current contemporary trends, as well as remaining in tune with his roots with traditional landscapes, and urban neighborhood scenes that exude keen observations of everyday life.

He has been a featured artist on the nationally syndicated radio talk show host Tom Joyner’s Fantastic Voyage Cruise, and his work is in the private collections of Verizon Wireless, Nationwide Insurance, and Liberty Bank and Trust. Most recently he created original murals for the Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, and Farm Burger Buckhead Restaurants, both located in Atlanta. Discriminating art lovers throughout the country and abroad collect his eclectic and contemporary art, which has led him to emerge as a visionary artistic talent for the 21st century.

Jerry Deeds to Exhibit at “Art at the Fountain” at the Jonquil Festival

Jerry Deeds will exhibit at the Smyrna Arts & Cultural Council’s “Art at the Fountain” at the Jonquil Festival on October 22nd and 23rd.

Artist Statement: My interest in photography was sparked at an early age by my father, who shot portraits with a 4x5 camera.  Later, I seriously began photography in college, while working at a photo shop in downtown Atlanta; and met many pro photographers who mentored me.

In the past 40 years. I have delved into many aspects of photography, including portraiture, advertising, model portfolio and my current passion and focus, fine art.

Much of my subject matter is from travels in Europe and the United States.  My greatest satisfaction is being able to find art in places that most people pass by, to find art in everyday things and places, and the detail that could make a work of art.

The art aspect of my photography began to accelerate when my wife, Gail, took over the presentation part of the business.  Her skills as an interior designer took the art to a new level, with her framing and matting matching perfectly to the artwork. She began photography ten years ago and has produced many wonderful images that we sell in our shows.

We have been in many art shows at various malls and art festivals, as well as occasional one artist shows.

Katy's interest in clay on the potter's wheel blossomed while attending classes at the Spruill Center for the Arts in Dunwoody in 2001. The Slocan Ramblers Perform at Jonquil City Sessions

The Slocan Ramblers opened the fall/winter season of Jonquil City Sessions last night with a spectacular bluegrass performance that mixed exciting new compositions with traditional bluegrass standards.  The show was opened by SACC Director Gregg Averett, Chairperson of the SACC Music Committee.

About the Slocan Ramblers

The Slocan Ramblers are Canada’s young bluegrass band to watch. Rooted in the tradition, fearlessly creative, and possessing a bold, dynamic sound, The Slocans (2015 Edmonton Folk Fest Emerging Artist Award recipients), have quickly become a leading light of Canada’s roots music scene, built on their reputation for energetic live shows, impeccable musicianship and their uncanny ability to convert anyone within earshot into a lifelong fan. Instrument masters individually, their combined vocals and harmonies join in a tight, rolling, foot-tapping experience you won’t be able to resist or forget!

On their new album, Coffee Creek (2015) The Slocan Ramblers blend lightning fast and devilishly intricate instrumentals with the sawdust-thick vocals of singer Frank Evans, who takes lead on songs ranging from rowdy old-time numbers like “Groundhog,” to a Dustbowl classic like Woody Guthrie’s “Pastures of Plenty.” “Toronto audiences don’t respond to a clean, polished Nashville sound,” tune composer and mandolinist Adrian Gross explains. “They dig a lot of energy in their music, a rowdy bar vibe. They’re hard to win over.” But The Slocan Ramblers have won them over, moving from a young ensemble of bluegrass pickers to one of the best known Canadian roots bands. They’ve done this by staying true to the roots of the music, not seeking to revive anything but rather to tap the rough and rowdy heart of the music.

Coffee Creek was produced by the band’s friend and mentor Chris Coole (The Foggy Hogtown Boys), a well-known banjo player and community leader in Toronto’s bluegrass and old-time scenes. Like Coole, The Slocan Ramblers bring the live, collaboratory aspects of the music to the fore, and they understand that if you polish up the music too much, you lose the raw excitement that makes it so vibrant. In the liner notes, Coole breaks it down: “What really impressed me while we were working on this album, was that, while they can pull off the precision and virtuosity that is at the backbone of bluegrass, they understand the power of the fragile moment in music. The fragile moment used to be a big part of what made an album cool–Monroe singing just beyond the edge of his voice, the moment right before you realize Vassar isn’t lost–the moment on and beyond the edge.” Listen to Evans’ worn vocals and you’ll hear some of the edge that great singers like Keith Whitley brought to the music. Or try Gross’ powerfully discordant and innovative mandolin solo on “Groundhog,” or Darryl Poulsen’s counterpoint Lester-Flatt-runs towards the end of the title track, or the rumbling beats of Alastair Whitehead’s acoustic bass on “Call Me Long Gone” (or Whitehead’s beautiful, world-weary original songs like “Elk River” or “Angeline”) to get a feel for how The Slocan Ramblers are pushing the envelope.

This is roots music without pretension, music intended to make you feel something, music to get you moving in a crowded bar. The Slocan Ramblers recorded Coffee Creek the same way they perform on stage: standing up, leaning into the music, and pushing harder and harder for that edge just beyond.

The Slocans are:
Frank Evans: Banjo
Adrian Gross: Mandolin
Darryl Poulsen: Guitar
Alastair Whitehead: Bass

SACC Co-Sponsors Flannery O’Connor Documentary Screening

What if everyone in Smyrna read the same book?

"Smyrna Reads," a "One Book" project, poses this question each year. This year's campaign focused on famous and award-winning author, Flannery O'Connor. The featured “read” this year was her short story, "Good Country People."

Flannery O'Connor is considered one of America's greatest fiction writers and one of the strongest apologists for Roman Catholicism in the twentieth century.  Born of the marriage of two of Georgia's oldest Catholic families, O'Connor was a devout believer whose small but impressive body of fiction presents the soul's struggle with what she called the "stinking mad shadow of Jesus."

The Smyrna Arts & Cultural Council co-sponsored the documentary screening of “Uncommon Grace: The Life of Flannery O’Connor” by Smyrna documentarian Bridget Kurt.  Ms. Kurt’s discussion included  expert commentary and rare photographs which gave the attendees a new appreciation for this highly celebrated, yet often misunderstood, storyteller.

Thank you, Bridget Kurt, for your excellent presentation!

If you want to stop in the middle to fish… his music has provided all of the hooks you will need.” What completes the bridge of the versatile singer is the flexible support of the band.
